Jeff’s Pirates Cove

June 9, 2011

Not far from Talofofo Falls is the prime watering hole for the Windward side of Guam.

Jeff’s Pirates Cove http://www.jeffspiratescove.com/ has been a fixture on the island for over three decades.  It is Guam’s Sloppy Joe’s/Hogfish/Schooner Wharf all rolled into one funky place half a world away.

Concrete and ceramic picnic tables are a reminder we’re in an area where 175 MPH winds are not uncommon.  These aren’t blowing away anytime soon.  Jeff’s has a good beer selection (rare on an island where Bud Light is about it).

Unfortunately, Jeff doesn’t have a selection of limes to go with the Corona.  Cerveza con limon?  Mas malo.

The views are good, as Jeff’s is right on the water.  There’s history here, too.

Jeff knows his customers well, though – and what his customers want is good old fashioned American kitsch.  Jeff has this nailed.

What’s more American than a hamburger?  A BRANDED hamburger, that’s what!

They come here in droves; Jeff’s contracted with every major tour group to drop ’em off at his doorstep.

And they just kept coming.  By the time we left, the place was packed with tourists, the parking lot filled with tour buses.

This, of course, makes Jeff a celebrity in his own right.

high kitsch – a pirate bar owned by a pirate – of sorts.  Jeff walked by as I took the pic; he was attired exactly as you see him in the poster.

On an island where many people struggle to make ends meet, Jeff’s done well for himself – and on his terms, so kudos to him.

This last sign reminds me of so many of the diners/attractions/tourist traps seen on Route 66 back in the day…

But then again – that’s what he’s serving up – a piece of Americana to folks hungry for the experience.  I have to admit – I do like it here, and will follow the sign’s instructions.

Pauline and I did think of you whilst we were there. It’s her kind of place, too – and yes, they allow dogs.

Guilty pleasures are permitted 14 hours away where no one has to know ytou are a cool dude. Imagine showing up at Jeff’s on the Beeza for a branded hambugger.
