Silver Anniversary

June 30, 2011

We did it!

25 years!

This past June 2oth, we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary in style at Raffles.

Raffles Hotel http://www.raffles.com/en_ra/Mainnavigation/home is the premier hotel in  Singapore, named after the founder of the Lion City.  This is their Grand Hotel, and celebrating 25 years of marriage anywhere else just didn’t feel right.

We out on our best outfits and headed to the Long Bar for a pre-celebratory libation.

The Long Bar http://www.raffles.com/EN_RA/Property/RHS/Restaurants_Bars/Long_Bar.htm is Singaore’s Sloppy Joes, and is famous for two things.  Supposedly the last tiger on Singapore was shot under the pool table here – and the Long Bar is the birthplace of the Singapore Sling.  Legend has it that proper ladies of Edwardian England were not supposed to partake in libations, so the intrepid lot contrived a drink looking all the world like a fruit punch they could sip in front of their unsuspecting spouses.

Which they did, frequently.

Nowadays, the Sling is served via premix unless one orders it ‘on the spot’, which is what we did.

A very tasty tax to pay, indeed.

The Long bar serves peanuts – and it’s perfectly acceptable in this somewhat straitlaced place to toss one’s shells on the floor:

After which we roped an Aussie couple

into taking the solo couple pix of us on this trip.

The sentiment makes up for the photo quality.

We retired to the adjacent Grill, where we dined on fine Aussie beef (really quite tasty!).

And to top it off, the kitchen made the Pheebs a special dessert of mango sorbet and a sangria reduction sauce atop.

This was truly special, as the Pheebs loves dessert – yet only gets one about 5% of the time when we eat out due to dietary restrictions. For her to have such a fantastic finish to a meal on her 25th – well, it’s better than sex.

trust me on that.

If I have any regrets, it’s that the following photo did not turn out better.  I blame the Singapore Sling.

The next one, however did – a wonderful finish to a magical evening.

We did it right – and I’m glad for it.
