News Flash! Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Rocks Guam!

July 23, 2011

At approximately 7:00 AM Saturday local time, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit the island of Guam. Residents were caught off guard by the tremblor, which rolled through the area with a series of waves likened to a ‘catamaran in light chop’ for half a minute.

No damage was reported.

On a related note – the Pheebs, annoyed by her husband who woke her up to see if she’d felt anything, has vowed to withhold fringe benefits until she catches up on her beauty sleep.

I too have lived through an earthquake, a massive 3.3 magnatude roller that lasted 15-30 seconds. I thought something blew up but didn’t get up to investigate. (I didn’t know it was an earthquake until someone told me the next day, some things are so foreign you don’t even consider them, you know? Explosion was far more likely)

The Pheebs has indicated she does not want to be awakened by anything less than a 7.0. There are delegates from all over the Ring of Fire (major earthquake zone in the Pacific) here on Guam this week; I polled them and no one felt the 5.5 and 5.6 quakes, as they were as common as a rental car in Miami.
