Girl Meets Hong Kong

August 9, 2011

The Pheebs has a different worldview than I.  When traveling to a new destination, I try to comprehend the place as a whole so as to understand how the pieces fit and work together.  I memorize maps, locales of specific sights, historical interest, etc.

The Pheebs?

LOOK!  A WI FI BOOTH!

It may seem like I’m making fun of her, but the opposite is true.  Her off-kilter perspective makes my day.

There’s a storyline in her head which causes her to take photos as these; in this instance, it’s less about the skyline and more about a city vibrant, intent on regenerating itself.  Yes – there are places in the world not in decline.

She seeks out art and culture.

She’s far better at shot composition than I.

This marriage works, I believe, as our skills and perspectives are complimentary – and we each stick to what we know and are good at.

She had NO IDEA where we were – but was able to capture a bride and groom on a photo shoot…I didn’t even see them.

In the harsh angularity of a city, she’s often found seeking the organic.  A streetcorner with tree is important.

A grove of trees at the base of Kowloon equally so.

She’ll spend more time on a fledgling than a skyline – which is just fine with me.

For the Pheebs – it’s about capturing the discrete elements which make up a scene.  It’s the way artists look at the world.

My life is far better for it.
