Sunset in the Tropics

August 13, 2011

A long time ago and in a world far, far away, we lived ordinary lives, the Pheebs and I.

Married, two kids, a house in the suburbs.  We did all the usual things – summer vacations Up North, shopping on the weekend, PTA meetings.

Spend an hour commuting to and from work every weekday.  Do it in the dark from November – February.

Party a bit on the weekends, daydream about vacations.  Yes – this was our life.

Then – we discovered the Pheebs had a rare disorder…Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, or EDS.  Amongst its many manifestations, EDS renders the Pheebs very sensitive to changes in temperature.  February in Michigan was the worst – I’d have to help her out of bed.

It came to us on a vacation in Vermont – why do we live like this?  Hibernate all winter, living life in pain.  We live in a free country (supposedly) and have the ability to choose how and where we live – so where would we go?

An awakening, this.  If we could live anywhere – where would anywhere be?

The tropics.  Endless summers free of pain.  So – we did it.  We moved to Key West.  We’ve discovered a life quite different than one lived on the mainland, a life made languid, I believe, by freedom from worrying about whether or not one freezes to death.  No television, no big box stores, no Walmart, and no socks.  The Pheebs’ choice of clothing are sundresses or bikinis.  I wear footwear so infrequently my gait has changed to the point where wearing shoes hurts.

Along the way we’ve discovered simple pleasures, and sunsets are one of the best.

Not two alike, changing moment to moment.  Mainlanders don’t dwell on sunsets – most appear to be unaware of their sublime beauty.

Sunset in the tropics.  Ahhh.
